Elbow Beach is a long, gently curving stretch of pale pink sand on Bermuda’s South Shore in Paget Parish, close to Hamilton. The beach takes its name from its distinctive bend, which resembles an elbow when viewed from the water. Protective coral reefs offshore help create relatively calm conditions, making the beach suitable for swimming and body surfing. Its shoreline combines open Atlantic views with dunes and low coastal vegetation, while hotels and residential areas occupy parts of the surrounding landscape. A central section remains publicly accessible, making Elbow Beach one of Paget’s best-known coastal areas.
Elbow Beach is also connected with Bermuda’s development as a destination for visitors. The area became associated with beachfront accommodation when the South Shore Hotel was established nearby, helping introduce hotel tourism directly to the island’s beaches. The wider Paget Parish retains elements of traditional Bermudian architecture and landscape, including pastel-coloured houses, limestone walls, and cedar trees. Bermuda’s African, British, Caribbean, and maritime influences are reflected in local customs, food, and community life. Food around Elbow Beach reflects Bermuda’s maritime traditions, with seafood playing an important role in local cooking. Bermudian dishes include fish chowder flavored with black rum and sherry peppers, fish sandwiches, codfish and potatoes, and baked or grilled local seafood. The wider island is also known for cassava pie and sweet treats made with local ingredients. One of Elbow Beach’s notable historical details is the wreck of the SS Pollockshields, an ammunition ship that ran aground on the reef during a severe storm; the crew was rescued from the vessel in a difficult operation. The wreck remains part of the area’s maritime history.
